A total of 463 individuals have undergone free health screening at ENRH premises from Monday, November 11th – Thursday, November 14th, 2024. This is part of activities to mark this year’s World Diabetes Day.
The screening involved the checking of fasting or random blood sugar levels and the measurement of body mass index. The OPD, Ground floor of the Wards Block and the entrance of the Emergency were the three areas mainly used for this exercise. On the last day of screening which was Thursday, November 14th 2024, the screening was done at the ENRH conference center a Public Lecture was held on diabetes.
Individuals who recorded elevated blood glucose levels were educated, assessed by brief clinical histories and subsequently referred for further evaluation and management.
World Diabetes Day is celebrated worldwide annually on November 14th. The day was created by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization to raise awareness about diabetes, its prevention and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
This year’s theme “Empowering Global Health” emphasized the importance of enabling communities to take proactive steps in preventing, identifying and managing diabetes, ultimately improving health outcomes. The Internal Medicine Department of ENRH organized a 4- days celebration (Monday, 11th November to Thursday, 14th November, 2024) to commemorate World Diabetes Day 2024.
The public lecture held on the 14th was attended by 200 individuals, including healthcare professionals, patient relatives, and community members. Two lectures were delivered by two seasoned speakers. The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Simon O. Frimpong (Family Physician Specialist and Medical Superintendent of the Kwesimintim Government Hospital) on the Topic: “A Simple Guide to Understanding Diabetes”, and the second lecture delivered by Ms. Mavis Gyasi (Principal Dietitian, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics Unit, ENRH) on the Topic: “Empowering Global Health Through Lifestyle Choices: A Key To Diabetes Prevention”.
A very interactive open forum ensued after the lectures, where concerns and questions from the members of the public were duly addressed by the speakers and Internal medicine specialists.
Notable dignitaries present for the public lecture included the Medical Director, Dr. Joseph K. Tambil, other members of hospital management, the hospital Chaplain and representatives from support institutions.
